Chinese 1A

This course is an introductory class in Chinese Mandarin for students entering the 7th grade. Due to the students' younger age, the class moves at a slower pace and covers only half of the material for level 1. It includes Pinyin romanization, tones, vocabulary, expressions, sentences patterns, dialogues, and traditional characters. The material is especially designed to meet the needs and interests of intermediate school age students. The topics of the lessons are useful and practical to them. The class emphasizes helping the students to acquire the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through oral drills and writing exercises. Completion of the course will allow the student to learn more than 300 compounds and 110 characters and achieve speaking and writing proficiency at beginning level. The student will also have some understanding of Chinese culture at the end of the sequence.
