Period 7
This is the highest level in the Chinese program at Iolani. Most of the students are seniors who have gone through the first four levels of this program. The focus of this course is to enable the students to learn new characters, compound words, and idiomatic expressions more intensively through the reading of authentic texts of a wide variety of styles, including newspaper, advertisement, short stories, traveling brochures, comic strips, and magazines articles. The use of the dictionary is encouraged. Classroom activities, conducted in Chinese, include frequent discussions of cultural values, current local and world events, and oral presentations. Students continue to practice calligraphy regularly. Quizzes are given frequently, and a test is given for each unit lesson. Journal writing is a regular assignment. Toward the end of the school year, the principles for changing traditional characters into simplified characters are introduced. By the completion of this course, students should be able to read and write approximately 900 characters.
