Latin I

Textbook: First Year Latin, Jenney, Scudder and Baade, Allyn & Bacon, New Jersey and California, 1979; Supplementary Workbook.

It is expected that the class will cover 48 to 52 lessons and 12 to 13 review lessons by the end of the year.

A comprehensive study of forms, syntax, vocabulary, reading exercises, of a difficulty commensurate with the level, which deal with Roman life and culture.

Forms: Nouns--five declensions; pronouns--demonstrative, personal, relative, interrogative, indefinite, intensive, reflexive; adjectives of the three declensions; comparison of adjectives; adverbs and comparison of adverbs; verbs--four conjugations active and passive, indicative and subjunctive, imperatives, infinitives, participles, irregular and deponent verbs.

Syntax: use of all cases of nouns (common and special uses); agreement of adjectives with nouns or pronouns; participial and infinitive constructions; major uses of subjunctive--hortatory, purpose, result, with verbs of fearing, substantive volitive, indirect questions, cum descriptive clauses; sequence of tenses.

Vocabulary: about 800 words, but by extension in the various forms of nouns, pronouns, adjectives and verbs, the number is multiplied many times over.

Emphasis on grammar and reading. Frequent quizzing on vocabulary and forms. Unit testing follows each review lesson. Final examination is comprehensive, based on the entire year's work.
