Air is constantly pumped through this water in order to maintain a minimum of 0.50 mg O₂ per liter of water. The combination of dissolved oxygen and organic nutrients feed bacteria which help to further decompose the waste into simpler products: NH₄⁺ is converted to NO₂^- and then to NO₃^-.
