Primary Settling
This is a primary clarification (or primary settling) tank. The bars you see which run across the width of the tank are moving slowly away from you.

As the bars move across the water, the floating grease and scum are pushed to the far side of tank.

Once these bars reach the far end of the tank, they continue downward to the bottom and begin moving toward you.

Solids that settle to the bottom of the tank are pushed along the bottom in the opposite direction and are collected on the near end of the pool and will eventually be scooped up into basins known as hoppers.

At this point in the treatment, the sewage has been physically separated into two parts: solids and liquids (the primary effluent). This liquid still contains organic matter that will be decomposed by microorganisms which will digest complex organic wastes.
The solid matter and the fluid matter will now follow separate pathways for treatment.
