The secondary clarifier
is a gigantic circular pool with a large pipe in the center.
The pipe is bringing in the suspension (MLSS) from the
aeration tanks. (To

|
Solids from the MLSS settle in the final clarifier while the supernatant (clear water) is treated with chlorine and sulfur dioxide for ocean discharge. |

Here Mr. Robert Smith, Operations Superintendent, lowers a device into the water of the secondary clarifier which takes a core sample of the sludge on the bottom. This allows him to measure the depth to which the sludge has accumulated and to be sure it does not become too thick (more than 4 feet is undesirable). |
