Growing Up

Midway during my school year in sixth grade, I went to Japan by myself for nine days to stay with a home stay family.

It was a bit of a problem for me because I was afraid of dogs,

and they had three humongous sheep dogs.

Walking the dogs was absolute pandemonium.

The dogs chased me through the park and wouldn't stop.

Luckily the father kept the dogs on a short leash.

I got ¥50,000 (about $520) to spend in Japan with no parental restrictions.

I sang out "Heaven, I'm in heaven."

I spent most of it on takoyaki.

Fried tempura batter with tako (octopus), green onions, and red ginger.

I, now more mature, realize that some things in this world just cannot be.

Magical people like Santa Claus disappear and are replaced by loving parents with money.

I once even waited three months for the so called Tooth Fairy to exchange my tooth for money.

I caught my mom trying to exchange a $2 bill without waking me up.

I sometimes realize that my days are numbered.

It is a fact we humans are growing up and dying a little every single day,

if you think about it.
