Joyous Christmas Old and New

At the age of three we hustled to prepare

warm, mouthwatering chocolate chip cookies,

sneaking some in for ourselves as a treat.

Carefully we poured a frosty glass of milk and trotted across our front yard,

sprinkling reindeer food for the handy reindeer staff of Santa's sleigh.

Squirming in our sheets,

we imagined our gifts to wear or play with the next morning,

wondering if all to be left on the counter

were tiny crumbs and an empty glass.

Now, twelve, our tree is not adorned with ornaments from past years,

but is illuminated by only few vibrant Christmas lights.

No stockings above our shoe rack,

no cookies or milk resting on the counter,

no reindeer food sprinkled out front,

no hopeful notes to Santa

make up our joyous Christmas this year.

Fairly excited for the morning we fall asleep in a flash

and wake up with a small warmth in our hearts,

as we appreciate the holidays and loving people

who have the kindheartedness to place a gift under our tree.
