This is just to say

We had been

marking each other

the entire game,

and I was getting angry,

irritated by the way

that you were playing.

Chasing after

the water polo ball.

I swim behind you,

Grab your leg,

And pull you back.

Just a bit.

You snap your foot back,

Smashing my face,

Ouch.

You’re marking me now,

holding my suit.

I could pull away,

But I choose not to.

Instead,

I flail my arms about,

acting like

You’re drowning me

Like you’re not letting me swim

The referee blows his whistle

Signaling you out

Banished,

To the penalty box.

“What?!” you cry.

“ I wasn’t even holding her!”

You shake your head,

And swim away

A laugh escapes

I go underwater,

Start giggling

Ha! Serves her right

I think to myself.

I come back

Up to the surface

With an innocent smile

Pricking the corners

Of my lips.
