Goals

A complete physical education program is provided for boys and girls in all grades with the goals of fitness, coordination and appreciation for physical activity.

Kindergarten

Emphasis is placed on fundamental movement patterns and personal space with the application of basic concepts to locomotor skills and activities: running, jumping, hopping, leaping, galloping, skipping and sliding. Object handling and eye-hand coordination activities are also introduced. Children learn non-competitive games, demonstrate how to listen and follow directions, and participate cooperatively with others.

First and Second

The goals for first and second graders are to develop and refine body movements and fundamental skills. Emphasis is placed on learning the basics of each skill, following directions and working with classmates in organized activities. Skills include: throwing and catching, kicking, jumping rope, swimming and tumbling.

Third

At this level students are prepared to participate in team sports; football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, paddleball and water polo are introduced. They are taught the fundamental skills of these activities and offered opportunities to develop and use them in lead-up games. A unit on physical fitness is also included.

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth

The basic goal for these grades is to develop skills which pertain to team activities. Students are taught specific skills which correspond to each sport. They learn the rules and are expected to know them before any games are played. Teamwork and sportsmanship are emphasized. There is also a unit on physical fitness.

Intramurals

There is an after-school intramural program offered to fourth, fifth and sixth graders. A variety of team sports is scheduled throughout the year.
