About the Author

Hi, My name is Brent Kutara and am currently a senior at Iolani School

This website was originally created as a project for a webdesign class at Iolani, under the guidance of Mr.Young, head of the Computer Department.

For help with this project, I would like to thank a couple of great people:
Mr.Young - for continual support in my web-design abilities and for fixing all those nagging code errors
Mrs.Liu - for all the Admissions Touring days - it's allowed me to interact with and help some really great parents and students. Ohh, and also for those tasty doughnuts.
Mom and Dad - for the camera used to take the pictures on this website...and of course for the support.
Mr.Okazaki and Ms.Fukuyama - for the video camera and computer help

I realize the stereotype is that Iolani gives a lot of homework and is very tough, academically. I won't lie to you - Iolani does give a lot, but it is only done to help the student. Those peoples who may fear Iolani because of this - please don't; not only is the school more than just work, but it's purpose is to help a person succeed in life. I was reading a book called Winning by GE CEO Jack Welch and saw a short passage about choosing a job, that I thought was the perfect metaphor and lesson for choosing a school.
"How much does the job offer you to grow and learn?

...any job you take should feel somewhat challenging going in. It should make you think, 'I can do most of the work, but there are certainly skills and knowledge this job requires that I don't have yet. I'm going to learn something here.'

In other words, any new job should feel like a stretch, not a layup. Why? Because stretching, growing, learning - all these activities keep you engaged and energized. They have the effect of making work more interesting, and they keep your head in the game.

Yes, a stretch job increases the possibility of you screwing up. That's why you should also make sure you join a company where learning is truly a value, growth for every employee is a real objective, mistakes aren't always fatal, and there are lots of people around whom you can reach out to for coaching and mentoring."

Something that encourages a person to learn and in a warm and supporting environment, whether it be in athletics or academics, is the best aid that a person can get. No matter where life takes you, I think this mantra should serve as an ideal directive.

And with that, I leave you to ponder over everything that may have stimulated those excitement receptors in the back of your brain...or the sleep ones (but hopefully not!). I just hope that this site has been as fun for you to read as it has been for me to make. Thanks!
