Incoming or Continuing Student

The Tips:

Watch out for AIM!

Sure, it's a cool way to talk to your friends - and I do it too, but
don't over do it. It's a big time consumer.

There's a library for a reason

Use it to get some good, quality study time in. It really helps.
Or you can just sleep.

Don't waddle around between classes

You have 5 minutes to get moving - use it wisely

Don't get sick!

Missing school a day or two is more harmful than you think.
It means that when you get back, you'll have to make up twice
or thrice the amount of workload and suffer from missed lectures.
Unless you are really sick...then please stay home

On Eating Breakfast

The industry standard is for a student to eat a hearty breakfast every morning in order to get his/her required nutrients and energy and such and such.
For some people (including myself), this is very much true - without it we would not be able to function very well in the morning. However, other people I know are just the opposite - breakfast only makes them more tired. So, I say whatever works for you - do it.

Take notes during class

I know a lot of people who don't - it always comes back to bite them.
Sure, it may seem boring and stupid, but teachers lecture for a reason -
to clarify the reading and help you on the test.

All work and no play makes the typical person go crazy!

Schoolwork may seem like a burden sometimes (or all the time) so give yourself a breather once in a while.
Play a sport, play cards (not on campus of course), play computer games...just do something else besides continual studying!
Have fun at Iolani - it's more than just academics.

Teachers are there to help

If you're struggling in some subject, don't be afraid to ask the teacher questions - they are always willing, and the session not only will benefit your knowledge, but they will appreciate that you took the time to ask them and are serious about their class.
There are also student tutors if need be.
Whenever I am confused about something, I just ask. It's worth it.

Counselors are there to help

There's one counselor from 7th-8th grade and another for 9th-12th grade.
Their job is to help you, the student, and if you don't take advantage of their abilities to aid, then you're wasting a very valuable assistance.
I didn't really get to know my high school counselor until around 9th-10th grade, but once I did, I realized how much I had missed. Counselors and teachers are there to help you succeed - and they love doing it.

Why Memorize it?

It's easy, and you'll know how much time left there is in a class, or a test.
Just add 5 minutes to the end of each period to know when you must get to class!

Just memorize the end of the 1st period, end of lunch, and the differences in between...

See those numbers in bold font above? Memorize end of 1st period. For Basic Schedule, just subtract "11" from the end of the 1st period to get the end of the 2nd period. Then subtract "11" from the end of the 2nd period to get the end of the 3rd period and so forth. Memorize end of lunch. Then continue on subtracting. Same goes for Chapel Schedule except you subtract "14" now. And for Assembly Schedules, subtract "16". And there you have it! Don't you feel smarter already?
