Neil A. Campbell Neil
A. Campbell combines the instincts of a research scientist with the
heart of an experienced and caring teacher. His enthusiasm for sharing
the fun of science with students stems from his own undergraduate experience.
He began his college studies at Long Beach State as a history major,
but switched to zoology after general education requirements required
him to take a science course. Following an MA in Zoology from UCLA,
Neil earned a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of California,
Riverside. His research has ranged from the control of protein synthesis
during animal development to the cellular basis of plant movements.
Dr. Campbell has published numerous research articles on the structure
and functions of salt glands in salt-tolerant plants and on the cellular
basis of leaf movements in Mimosa (the sensitive plant) and other legumes.

His 30 plus years of teaching a wide variety of students included general biology courses at Cornell University, Pomona College, and San Bernardino Valley College. Because of these experiences Dr. Campbell has developed a keen sensibility about what today's students need to excel in the life sciences. Committed to improving life science education, in 1991 he began sponsoring annual scholarship competition open to undergraduates intending to teach biology at the secondary school level. Neil is known world wide as the author of Biology, a textbook for biology majors. Since1987, 65% of the market share for introductory biology has been held by his text, which correlates to over 375,000 students per year being introduced to college biology via his words. Another way to examine his impact is that 65% of all U.S. biological scientists, physicians, biology teachers, and biotechnologists under the age of 37 used Biology as their introductory text. Neil is also the lead author of two non-major textbooks, Biology: Concepts and Connections and Essential Biology. In 1995, he co-founded Peregrine Publishers, creators of The Biology Place and The Chemistry Place web sites. Over 7000 high schools and 800 colleges and universities currently use these web sites. His most recent project is the development of a high school biology textbook, Biology: Exploring Life and accompanying web site that will be published in 2003. |
