Stone Cold Steve Austin built a solid, but not great career
in WCW where he took home a couple of TV and US titles. He was fired
though because, "Nobody would make it in today's world with black tights
and black boots," according to Eric Bischoff. After making a short
stop in ECW and debuting the idea of Steveamania, Austin was hired by the
WWF as "The Ringmaster." He was the protégé of Ted
Dibiase and ended up "winning" the Million Dollar Title, but that
angle ended fast when Dibiase left the WWF. The WWF could not waste
the talent of Austin so they put him in the 1996 King of The Ring. He went
through all of the competition, and with a bleeding lip and all, defeated
the injured Jake the Snake Roberts to win the 1996 KOTR. At the ceremony
to proclaim him the king, Austin set the WWF on fire with his new motto
of the year and that was the rules of Austin3:16.
Austin ridded his new wave of success with his bad attitude
and his funny quotes all the way through SS when he suffered a setback
loss to Bret Hart. But Austin didn't lose focus and continued on
to winning the Royal Rumble. The referee's didn't see him get eliminated,
and he got back in the ring like nothing happened and went on to win the
Rumble. After being eliminated in the Final Four Match at an IYH
after the Rumble by Bret Hart, Austin vowed to make the Hitman pay.
At Wrestlemania 13, Austin lost the I quit match to Hart after passing
out, while bleeding and locked in the Sharpshooter. But Austin won
the support of the fans on that night, and began the fight against the
Hart Foundation that would last him through the year, at least until Summerslam.
1997 Summerslam was a day to forget as Austin, although defeating
Owen Hart for the IC title, almost broke his neck after a tombstone piledriver.
Austin would be out of action for months, but still raised havoc on the
microphone. Austin was forced to give up the IC title while injured,
but made a triumphant return at the November Survivor Series classic by
beating Owen Hart and getting back the title. Austin continued his
comeback with a win over Rocky Maivia at the December IYH and eliminated
the Rock at the 1998 Royal Rumble to gain a shot against HBK for the WWF
Title.
Wrestlemania 14 was the night that Stone Cold was on and with
Mike Tyson in the corner of HBK and dX, he had to go up against a lot.
But Tyson showed his true colors by knocking out Michaels, and after a
Stone Cold Stunner, Steve Austin and Mike Tyson celebrated as a NEW WWF
Champion was crowned. Vince McMahon has since tried to tone down
the tactics of Austin, but to no avail as Austin has gained victories over
Dude Love at the last 2 WWF PPV's. With Kane on the horizon at the
1998 KOTR, this could be the year that Steve Austin is #1 in the professional
Wrestling World.
Just last night, Stone Cold suffered a monster setback when
he was defeated by Kane for the WWF World Heavyweight Title. Although
the Undertaker was the one to make Austin bleed, Kane still got the victory,
leaving Austin titleless and ticked off. Where does the Rattlensake
go from here?? I have a feeling that the Lord of Darkness may be
waiting in the wings.
