Archery
Archers helped a lot in the Medieval times. They hunted for food and guarded the castle in case any enemies attacked. When enemies did attack, they shot their arrows at the people trying to climb up ladders or lingering carelessly below. They could use longbows or crossbows to shoot careless commanders. The longbows they used were wooden and hand drawn. They were made 5 to 6 feet long and the string attached to it was made of hemp. The arrow for a long bow was about a yard long and was armed with metal heads on its arrows. The crossbow was very short and took longer to load than the longbow, but it was more powerful and had a lot better aim when you shot from it. The English foot soldiers were considered very good archers. They used short bow first then replaced it with the longbows, and finally used the crossbow. The church outlawed the crossbow so that it could only be used in battle because it was so dangerous. They used thin arrowheads for knights to puncture their armor and thick ones were used for the normal foot soldiers. The archers hunted because they were the only ones who would be able to hit an animal since hunters with normal weapons wouldn't be able to hit the animals. They also did it for sport and played n tournaments. Robin Hood was well known because he stole from the rich to give to the poor. He was also known for his excellence in archery.
