The Dragon

Dragons were said to be huge, fire breathing, lizard like creatures. They had wings, sharp teeth, a strong jaw, and a powerful tail. It was able to destroy entire villages with its strong, scaly tail. In Medieval times, the dragon represented evil and darkness. It was believed that the dragon represented the evils encountered in life. They believed the reason for either crops or villages burning was the dragon's fault, giving the dragon a bad, destructive reputation. Although the dragons were linked to destruction, some of the knights' coat of arms pictured a dragon.

In stories and legends, brave knights fought and slayed dragons to save a beautiful princess, whom the dragon had kidnapped. If a knight was able to successfully slay and defeat the dragon, he could take the treasure, protected by the dragon, hidden in the cave like den of the dragon. A famous legend is called "St. George and the Dragon."
