Women's Roles

Women played entirely different roles in the Middle Ages. When the women were young, they were told what they could and could not do. When children were about 4 or 5 years old, marriages were arranged among the fathers. The husband ruled the household. Beating women was common back then, but it had to be reasonable. Women had to obtain lots of work back then. They worked in the fields and spun clothing. Women made clothes for their children and family. The women operated the business when their husbands died. Women, who were peasants, played a difficult role in the Middle Ages.

All women wove and sewed tapestries for the castle. Tapestries were rug-like materials, used as decoration in the castle. They could be also be used as curtains, to keep the drafts in on cold nights. Women themselves embroidered and wove their own tapestries or could have them done by artisans or weavers. Although we have curtains and "tapestries" already made, embroidery and sewing are still alive today.

Noble women had the same life as the peasants, but with a higher amount of respect. Men weren't usually looking for love when they searched for women. When fathers arrange marriages, the couple may have never met before. The ceremony of their marriage was set through letters and contracts. Once they were married, all the women's belongings were now in the hands of her husband. Yet, the noble women ran the household and watched over the peasants working around the castle. The women had the right to set up the defense when their husbands were away. If the woman couldn't produce at least one heir to the thrown, the husband had the right to divorce his wife.
