  • Kona (February 23, 2002) -- From the start of the season, the male swimming and diving team for the Raiders were very consistent in scoring and managed not to pull off a total sweep in the ILH in all divisions (Intermediate, Junior Varsity and Varsity), and winning all the swimming events at the ILH varsity championships, but to take it to the next level by destroying the competition at the state meet on Kona.

The last time the boys took the state title was in 1996. This time, not only did the boys take the state title once again, they broke 5 of the 7 records broken at the swimming finals. The boys overwhelmingly took first place with an impressive 91 points. The Iolani girls took third with 39 points, 20 points behind Waiakea, which took first.

Brian Lee, the head coach who has been coaching the Raiders' swim team since 1990 said, "We knew that we had a special group from the beginning -- It's good to see them have such a great success. This just shows that our program has come a long way."

When it came time for qualifying for the state meet, almost 90% of the times entered were made at the ILH Championships. "That's exactly where we wanted the swimmers to be," said coach Lee.

HongZhe Sun ('03) helped contribute to the team's success by breaking a 16 year old state record in the 100 yard butterfly. One of his other strongest events include the 200 Individual medley, which he did not compete. "I was dissapointed with my times," stated Sun, "but I feel real happy for the team, and I love the Iolani One-Team spirit."

Every meet has to have a heart breaker. Carly Omizo came within a hundredth of a second in the girls 100 breaststroke. "Carly looked like she got 1st place, but she has short fingernails," said Kimberly Ono ('02) and Cherise Saito ('02). Omizo finished with a time of 1:06.20. 1/100th of a second under Cassie Kaapu-Lyons of Waiakea with a time of 1:06.19.

    --Iolani Record Breakers--
Boys 200 Freestyle: Mark Eckert Jr. ('02) smashed the previous record of 1:40.78 set by Hong Zhe Sun last year. Eckert finished with a time of 1:39.28.

Boys 500 Freestyle: Again, Mark Eckert Jr. breaks another record. The old record was set in 1981 by Jimmy Murakami at a time of 4:31.00. Eckert broke it by almost three seconds with a time of 4:28.60.

Boys 100 Butterfly: HongZhe Sun ('03) finished at 49.40 breaking the old record, set by Matthew Cerizo with a time of 50.95, set in 1986.

Boys 200 Freestyle Relay: Patrick Morrissey ('03), HongZhe Sun ('03), Mark Eckert Jr.('04),
Joshua Anaya ('02) collectively broke the boys 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.22. Smashing the old record of 1:28.38, set by Punahou in 2000.

Boys 200 Medley Relay: Hong Zhe Sun ('03), Daniel Toba ('02), Mark Eckert Jr.('04), Joshua
Anaya ('02), were part of the team that swam 1:35.98, breaking the old record of 1:39.98 set in 2000 by Baldwin.

Kimberly Ono ('02) became the girls' 100 yard backstroke state champion and came close to breaking state record, but fell short by one second, finishing with a time of 58.30.

By special request, the four senior girls (Carly, Kim, Bri and Cherise) would like to leave this message to the rest of the team: "Reach for the moon, for if you miss, you'll be among the stars."

Congratulations to the boys' swimming and diving team for completing a fantastic season, sweeping all divisions and the state title, and congratulations to the girls' swimming and diving team for placing third in the state meet and having a great season!
