The Iolani Boys Junior Varsity Tennis Team emerged victorious over Mid-Pacific Institute in the season-opening tournament on Monday, winning three of five matches.

First doubles action was intense, as freshman Daniel Adachi and sophomore Daniel Igawa fought their way to a (6,2) (7,5) victory. After a comfortable first set, both Adachi and Igawa struggled to hold serve, but their serve-volley strategy and aggressive net-work pulled them through in the second set. Both Daniels utilized serve-direction and poach/stay hand signals to coordinate their movements around the court.

Second doubles also won in straight sets. Juniors Stephen Chun and Dustin Miyakawa played a steady, consistent game to clinch a (6,1) (6,1) victory. Powered by Stephen Chun's confident returns and volleys, Iolani managed to break the Mid Pacific service game five times.

Third doubles secured the final match for Iolani as sophomores Cullen Talbot and Thomas Robillard took the courts by storm in straight sets. After their (6,1) (6,1) victory,

Talbot explained, "We hit the ball in, sometimes. It's a good thing we won."

Perhaps the most exciting of the five matches was first singles, where brothers Andrew (Iolani) and Daniel (Mid-Pacific) Llarenas faced off. Although losing (6-2) in a tiebreak for the first set, Andrew refused to relent.

Junior Stephen Chun, who has played with both brothers remarked, "Daniel can outgun [Andrew], and both of them know it, but Andrew has the heart of a fighter. He can outlast Daniel any day."

In the end, Daniel Llarenas managed to edge out over his brother in a hard-earned victory. In second singles, sophomore Michael Igawa fought hard through a grueling
(6,3) (3,6) (2,6) three-setter.

Asian studies teacher Susan Igawa remarks, "I get nervous when I watch [Michael] play, but I know it's his game and he will give his best. I know how hard everyone practices and how hard everyone plays; I am just there to support, just like all the other parents."
