Taiwan Opponents turn Mentors
8/19/10 - On Tuesday just days after sweeping thru Ann Kang in their first visit to the islands, the Taiwan Chinese team
returned to Iolani’s Lower Gym to lead the Varsity squad's regular 4:30 pm practice. The Iolani Coaching Staff stepped
aside with notes in hand while Lin Kuang Hung conducted the 2 ½ hour practice. Language didn’t seem to be much of an obstacle,
Iolani senior Christina Liu translated Coach Hung’s instructions when necessary.
Coach Hung is the two time Taipei National Coach and most recently coached their 2006 National Team to the quarter finals in
the FIVB World Championships.
The one day combined practice focused on passing and attacking. These elements of Taiwan’s game were so dominant over the
weekend it disallowed the Hawaii and California teams to get into a rhythm to score. The selected drills were quick,
precise with constant movement. There were very few details that escaped Coach Hung’s eye. Mechanics and footwork were
frequent reminders from the Taiwan coach.
When asked if the team would return sometime soon he replied possibly in the next couple of years. The team's most memorable
moment in Hawaii was "li hing pineapple"! Chung Shan Industrial & Commercial School is a private school with a student body of
10,000 students.

Hen Hao! (Good Job!) Chung Shan Defeats Mira Costa for AKIVB Championship!
8/14/10 - On the final day of the 2010 Ann Kang Invitational, Granbury defeated Samohi for Copper, Moanalua defeated
Maryknoll for Bronze, and Molokai defeated 'Iolani for Silver. This win was the highest finish for Molokai ever
in the Ann Kang, and was the highest finish for a Hawaii team this year! (Hana Hou Molokai!) Fans got a chance to see
Molokai's explosive Kalei Adolpho, 6'1" MH, who will be playing for UH Wahine next year. Kamehameha Maui beat
Kahuku to take 3rd in the all Hawaii Silver bracket. Fans got to see another future Wahine in dynamic 5'10" OH
Ginger Long of Kamehameha Maui. In the Gold division Mira Costa defeated Los Al in two to advance. Fans got to see Los Al's
exceptional power house, 6'0" OH Jane Croson, who will also be playing for the Wahine next year. In the other half
of the bracket Taiwan's Chung Shan got a rematch with Newport Harbor, who defeated them earlier in pool play in a
3-game thriller. This time it went much different as Taiwan methodically swept Newport Harbor. Then came the rematch
of Los Al and Newport Harbor in the battle for 3rd. Newport Harbor got the win in a convincing sweep, avenging their
2-game loss a day earlier. In the championship match it looked like Chung Shan was going to walk away with it after
a 25-14 pounding in game 1. Mira Costa turned it around in game 2 and almost stretched it to 3, but fell short 25-23.
Look out CIF, the Mustangs are still here! (and so is Newport Harbor, and Los Al, ... Cali rocks!)

Kamehameha Wins States in an Exciting 5 Match Slug Fest!
10/31/09 - Somewhere around game 4, Kamehameha senior, and tournament MOP, Taylor Akana started
putting all kinds of balls down, and the momentum and confidence swang towards Kamehameha. Overall,
both Punahou and Kamehameha played extremely well making this one of the most exciting championship
matches in recent history.
Volleyball fans want more ILH representation in States!!!
ILH volleyball coaches meet to discuss divisional dilemmas, are more ILH state bids possible?
Will DII's only play DII's? Will a DIII be added?
The top four finishers for 2009 are 1-Kamehameha, 2-Punahou, 3-Moanalua, 4-Kahuku ..

2nd Round ILH Semifinal Match with Kamehameha
10/15/09 - Varsity stumbles, loses to Kamehameha in 4 to end season, 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 13-25.
The Varsity Raiders finish 3rd in the ILH and drop to 8th in the State as the best teams from across the State head
into the State Tournament. Iolani did get a chance to play some of these teams already, some more than once.
Iolani lost to Punahou in the HVI tournament semi's and then again in Round 1 play, Lost to Kamehameha in both
Round 1 and Round 2 play, Beat Kahuku in Ann Kang Tournament 3rd place match, Beat Hawaii Baptist in the Kauai
Challenge Tournament, then again in Ann Kang Tournament, then again in Round 1 play, Beat Moanalua in HVI
Tournament, Beat Farrington in Ann Kang Tournament twice, and beat Waiakea in the Kauai Challenge. This season
ended in a very similar fashion to last year, where the Raiders fell short of winning a State bid. Two years ago
Punahou came in third but went to the State Tournament since the ILH had 3 bids that year. That was the year Saint
Francis decided to drop down to Division II, and the number of ILH bids dropped from 3 to 2. With only 2 ILH bids,
this was a very important match for these two teams. Hats off to Kamehameha for stepping up when it counts!

2010 Senior Night
10/9/09 - Thanks to all for the great support and aloha so far this season! In their last home match of the
regular season, the Raiders lost in three sets to a resilient Kamehameha team, 24-26, 27-25, 22-25. With this

Kamehameha.
Now the second round starts, and only two ILH teams will be invited to the State Tournament! Punahou will get
one bid as the winner of round 1. As the first seed of the ILH championship tournament, Punahou gets a bye and
takes on the winner of Maryknoll and Sacred Hearts. As the second seed, Kamehameha gets a bye and takes on
the winner of Iolani and Midpac. Next up for the Raiders - Midpac, Tuesday night, 10/13/09, 5:00pm, Iolani lower gym!!!

Redondo Union wins the 2009 Ann Kang Invitational Tournament!
8/22/09 - Congratulations to Redondo Union for winning the Gold Bracket championship of the 2009 Ann Kang
Invitational Tournament. The championship match pitted Redondo Union from California against Punahou High School from Hawaii.
Star Bulletin news clip summarizing the championship match.
Iolani beat Kahuku in two straight to finish in 3rd place in the Gold Bracket.
If I had to sum up the tournament in one word it would be "parity" with Punahou and Redondo Union fairing a little
better but all the same being pushed to the limit at times. Farrington and Kahuku were the sleeping giants of the
weekend, capable of taking any team out when motivated, then playing the Hyde part of Dr. Jekyll and putting up a
shadow of resistance in other matches. We were also treated to matches that exhibited defenses beyond anything
I can recall with Maryknoll and HBA providing the uuuhhs and aahhhs. Iolani proved that the Kaua’i Challenge
finish was no fluke only being bettered by the tourney champs Redondo and the runner up Punahou. Moloka’i, always
an athletic bunch, found the new format to their liking and took advantage of playing the entire compliment of
matches at full throttle. Edison, Mater Dei and Van Nuys offered up the litmus test for the Hawaii teams as they
try to take their skills to new heights. And what a treat to watch Mid Pacific and Kaiser battle it out early on
the last day to try and claim the flight championship. The intensity and drama of that contest was to be played out
right to the final match that closed Ann Kang. This format more than any other in recent history of the tournament
allows for coaches to tweak, adjust, expose and experiment in preparation of their seasons. Most significantly it
promoted post season highlights at the 8th annual Ann Kang Tournament.

2009 Varsity squad starts off the pre-season with a Tournament win!
8/17/09 - The Raiders traveled to Kaua`i for the 2009 Kaua`i Challenge this past weekend and went undefeated
in 9 matches over 3 days of play. They played Texas 3A defending champions LoveJoy in the semifinal match
and Troy High School of Fullerton California in the championship match. It's still early in the season and
everyone is just getting started, but the girls showed some mettle in tough situations.
Good luck in this upcoming season!

Varsity loses in five to end 2008 season
10/21/08 - The Raiders suffered a season ending loss to Kamehameha in the semi finals of the ILH
2nd round tourney. The scores of the match were 25-18, 25-27, 23-25, 25-19, 11-15. This
was a hard fought match and we are very proud of these girls effort, and how they showed everyone
that they all will fight and compete to the end as one team.
It is unfortunate that this team will not be participating in this years HHSAA Tourney due to the
ILH having only two State berths, but this team will not let that indicate the success of this year's
team. This year's team finished an ILH season of 14-3, with an overall record of 30-9 also having
to compete against a possible National Champion La Costa Canyon (21-25, 23-25) at the 2008
Durango Fall Classic.
We want to thank all the parents, family, friends for their contributions and support for the team
and the program. Best wishes to our Seniors (Jana Tokuhama, Kelly Pang, Kelli Ching, I'Ishah Keliikoa,
and Chelsea Hardin);, and Look forward to 2009 with our underclassmen (Mali'e Yoon, Mahina Haina,
Alissa Youart, Georgette Liutolo, Lumi Shimizu, Kelsey Afoa, Noelle Chan, Kamea Chock, Ashlee Asada,
and Alyssa Pang).
An ending message for this year's team is a quote from a legendary basketball coach Al Wooden.
"Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self satisfaction in knowing
you made the effort to become the best that you are capable of becoming"
Go Raiders!

played solid volleyball winning in 3 with scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-19. With this win, the Raiders advance
out of the quarters to a semifinal match with #2 Kamehameha. In other play, #4 Sacred Hearts beat #5
Maryknoll in 3 to advance to the other semifinal match against #1 Punahou.

Intermediate Black loses two close ones
10/11/08 - The young Raiders played very well in an exciting match that could have gone either way. Both sets were
decided by 2 points. In the 2nd set, the Raiders were up by 3 points with less than a minute to play.
Give Kamehameha credit for battling back to within 1 point as time expired. Due to the win by 2 rule,
play went on and Kamehameha eventually pulled out a win. Congratulations to our girls for a 2nd place
finish this year!

Senior Night 2008
10/7/08 - Thanks for your support on senior night. Our girls had a nervous loss to Punahou 10-25, 20-25.
Seniors Kelly Pang, Kelli Ching, I`isha Keliikoa, Chelsie Hardin, and Jana Tokuhama showed us
their spirit and humility on this their special night. Kelly Pang made a heart felt return to
the court after being out with an injury since August.
With this loss, Iolani finishes third in the ILH Division 1 first round.

9/27/08 - Iolani beats Kamehameha in 3 sets, 27-25, 23-25, 28-26. The Raiders had a good showing as they battled back and forth

Varsity squad returns from Durango
9/22/08 - The Varsity team just returned from Durango where they got to play some great teams from across the nation.
They had a tough first round pool, but in it they got to play the eventual tournament champion La Costa Canyon,
8th place finisher Liberty, and host Durango who has a 6' 6" OH. On Saturday they won their crossover match and had
some good competitive games, taking 3rd place in the Bronze division. The Raiders finished in 19th place out of
32 teams. They had some close games that could have gone either way. Overall it was a great experience
that will help the team throughout the rest of the season. For game scores/photos see the
2008 Durango page.

2008 AKIVT was AWESOME!!!
8/16/08 - Congratulations to Mira Costa for winning the Gold bracket championship of the 2008 Ann Kang Invitational Tournament
in a hard fought championship match with Wilson, 26-24, 25-27, 15-11. Hawaii teams played spirited volleyball and
competed fiercely, but mainland teams dominated this year's tournament fielding 7 of the 8 teams in the championship
bracket. Iolani was the only Hawaii team in the championship round.
Congratulations go out to Hawaii Baptist Academy, the Silver bracket champion; to Radford, the Bronze bracket
champion; and to Kahuku, the Flight division champion.
The 2008 AKIVT Final Standings page posts the
results with team pictures of the winning teams from each bracket. Download this
